Download or read book Vagueness and Law written by Geert Keil and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Synopsis: Vague expressions are omnipresent in natural language. As such, their use in legal texts is virtually inevitable. If a law contains vague terms, the question whether it applies to a particular case often lacks a clear answer. One of the fundamental pillars of the rule of law is legal certainty. The determinacy of the law enables people to use it as a guide and places judges in the position to decide impartially. Vagueness poses a threat to these ideals. In borderline cases, the law seems to be indeterminate and thus incapable of serving its core rule of law value. In the philosophy of language, vagueness has become one of the hottest topics of the last two decades. Linguists and philosophers have investigated what distinguishes " vagueness from other kinds of linguistic indeterminacy, such as ambiguity, generality, open texture, and family resemblance concepts. There is a vast literature that discusses the logical, semantic, pragmatic, and epistemic aspects of these phenomena. Legal theory has hitherto paid little attention to the differences between the various kinds of linguistic indeterminacy that are grouped under the heading of ", let alone to the various theories that try to account for these phenomena. Bringing together leading scholars working on the topic of vagueness in philosophy and in law, this book fosters a dialogue between philosophers and legal scholars by examining how philosophers conceive vagueness in law from their theoretical perspective and how legal theorists make use of philosophical theories of vagueness. The chapters of the book are organized into three parts. The first part addresses the import of different theories of vagueness for the law, referring to a wide range of theories from supervaluationist to contextualist and semantic realist accounts in order to address the question of whether the law can learn from engaging with philosophical discussions of vagueness. The second part of the book examines different vagueness phenomena. The contributions in part 2 suggest that the greater awareness to different vagueness phenomena can make lawyers aware of specific issues and solutions so far overlooked. The third part deals with the pragmatic aspects of vagueness in law, providing answers to the question of how to deal with vagueness in law and with the professional, political, moral, and ethical issues such vagueness gives rise to.

Upon arrival however, he realizes the temple is not what he was expecting. Although Peru is thousands of miles from ancient Greece, the temple within its rainforest is dedicated to the Greek god of thunder, Zeus. Even more astounding is its treasure hidden within. Deep inside, an intricate staff worked into the shape of a lightning bolt, waits for Colt to claim its power. The World’s Divide collection of books 1 through 4 covers the discovery of the Lightning Staff, Hades’ Sphere, Poseidon’s Trident and Demeter’s Wreath and the magical powers they possess. As the series of novellas continue, other nations besides the United States also join the hunt for the ancient relics. Some nations will use them for good, while others for evil. Relationships are forged, while others are broken, all against the backdrop of growing world strife and the beginning rumblings of a third worldwide war.

Four full-length novels are included in this bundle: Book #1: Drowning Mermaids Book #2: Fathoms of Forgiveness Book #3: Boundless Sea Book #4: Abyssal Zone ABOUT THE NOVELS: Drowning Mermaids To escape the war in her underwater kingdom, the noble daughter of a murdered king must flee to Alaska. Doing all she can to keep her younger sisters safe, Aazuria tries to assimilate and work among the Americans, with her feisty red-haired bodyguard at her side. This refuge holds pleasant surprises, for the princess meets a somber gentleman in a dark corner who promises to show her his world. Trevain Murphy is a successful crab fisherman who has spent his life building an empire above the sea, but knows nothing of the greater empire beneath the surface. When a graceful dancer captures his attention, he becomes fascinated with her. As it becomes clear that the dark-haired woman is much more than she seems, Trevain is unprepared to uncover the staggering secrets behind her innocent facade. Neither the captain nor the princess can imagine that their lives will become forcibly entwined as a common enemy threatens both of their worlds... Fathoms of Forgiveness There is no divorce in the undersea kingdom of Adlivun. Marriage is a bond that lasts until death--even if death comes in several centuries, and in that time your spouse happens to become your sworn enemy. This is the conflict that General Visola Ramaris faces when she learns that the mighty Vachlan is behind the attacks on her kingdom. She has sworn to protect Adlivun with her life, but long ago, she also swore to love and honor her husband... Princess Aazuria forbids Visola from taking matters into her own hands, but she cannot protect her friend from the evil grip of her former lover. Visola must choose whether she will destroy Vachlan once and for all, or attempt the hardest thing conceivable: communication. After two hundred years of desertion, she has no faith in their feeble bond and knows she can never forgive him. When he threatens the person dearest to her, she must take action. Confronting Vachlan on enemy territory will be nothing short of suicide, but she has no choice... Boundless Sea With Queen Aazuria missing, the undersea kingdom of Adlivun has been thrust into political unrest and turmoil. Elandria is expected to take over her sister's responsibilities, but she is overwhelmed with depression. The sea-dwellers are desperately in need of protection from the foreign submarine superpower known as The Clan of Zalcan. Although it is ancient tradition for the mermaids to conceal and protect their people from land-dwelling societies, they decide to finally reveal themselves to the American public and seek assistance. After much political debate by the countries of the Pacific Rim, America and Russia have decided to help: on one condition. The mermaids must join APEC and contribute endless labor to the organization, helping to build and indefinitely maintain a massive trans-pacific highway tunnel which will link Alaska to the Chukotka Peninsula. This will allow land-traffic to travel between North America and Eurasia for the first time, changing the economy of the world forever. Abyssal Zone Aazuria Vellamo has returned to the undersea kingdom of Adlivun only to find that the place she called home for over five hundred years has changed drastically. Having been forsaken as dead several years ago, she finds her husband in the arms of another woman. Once the beloved rightful queen, Aazuria is now an outcast hiding among the commoners. She observes the political situation from a distance, trying to maneuver her daughter into the safest place possible-- but Aazuria quickly discovers that no part of the expanding nation is safe any longer...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Synopsis: The Book of Revelation is the last book in the canon of the New Testament, and its only apocalyptic document, though there are short apocalyptic passages in various places in the gospels and the epistles. This first of two volumes on Revelation offers systematic and thorough interpretation of the book of Revelation. Revelation brings together the worlds of heaven, earth and hell in a final confrontation between the forces of good and evil. Its characters and images are both real and symbolic, spiritual and material, and it is frequently difficult to know the difference between them. Revelation's cryptic nature has ensured that it would always be a source of controversy. This commentary focuses on the theological content, gleaning the best from both the classical and modern commentary traditions and showing the doctrinal development of Scriptural truths. Scholarship on the book of Revelation has nonetheless not only endured, but even captured the imagination of generations of Bible students, both professionals and laypeople alike. Through its focus on the message of the book through scholarly analysis, this International Theological Commentary reconnects to the ecclesial tradition of biblical commentary as an effort in ressourcement, though not slavish repetition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Synopsis: In 1996, for its 24th scientific meeting, the International Society on Oxygen Trans port to Tissue made its third visit to the United Kingdom. The previous two meetings were held in Cambridge in 1977 and 1986, but this was the first meeting to be held "north of the border" in Scotland. It was attended by some 186 delegates and accompanying persons and there were 128 presentations. The venue was the West Park Centre, the University of Dundee's residential conference centre, and ISOTT was only the second major meeting to be held there using the new Villa accommodation. Dundee's slogan is "City of Discovery" since it became the permanent home of the Royal Research Ship Discovery which was built in the city and was used by Captain Scott on his first ex pedition to the Antarctic. The ISOTT meeting also fulfilled its promise of being a meeting of dis covery with sessions on all aspects of oxygen transport to tissue. The inclusion of a session on oxygen transport in vascular disease reflected the interests of the local participants. All of the manuscripts were reviewed both for their scientific and editorial accept ability and in some 50% of cases, revisions were requested from the authors. Some manu scripts were ultimately rejected. However, in view of the importance of producing the Proceedings as quickly as possible it is possible that some minor errors may have slipped through, for which the editors apologise.
